Afroman Live at Nextdoor

Nextdoor is proud to present Afroman live in Honolulu for one night only! Join us on Thursday September 20th while we forget to go class, or go to court, or go to work, because we got high. The only thing you can’t forget to do is get your tickets early and come to Nextdoor for the show!

From Wikipedia, (as if he needs an introduction),

Joseph “Afroman” Foreman’s musical career began in the eighth grade, when he began recording homemade songs and selling them to his classmates. “The first tape I made was about my eighth-grade teacher,” he once recalled. “She got me kicked out of school for sagging my pants, which was a big deal back then. So I wrote this song about her and it sold about 400 copies: it was selling to teachers, students, just about everybody. And I realized that, even though I wasn’t at school, my song was at school, so in a way I was still there. All these people would come by my house just to give me comments about how cool they thought the song was.”Foreman also performed in his church at a young age, playing both the drums and guitar.

In 1998, Afroman released his first album, My Fro-losophy; and later relocated to Hattiesburg, Mississippi,[1] where he met drummer Jody Stallone, keyboardist/bassist Darrell Havard, and producer Tim Ramenofsky (aka “Headfridge”).

Ramenofsky produced and released Afroman’s album Because I Got High in 2000 on T-Bones Records; it was distributed primarily through concerts and the file-sharing service Napster before its title track was played on The Howard Stern Show. Afroman was inspired to write the song’s lyrical content by his unwillingness to clean his room, and he ran with the idea of everyday tasks being derailed by drug use. In late 2001, the song became a hit and was featured in the films Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, The Perfect Score, and Disturbia later in the 2000s. “Because I Got High” was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 2002.

After the single’s success, Afroman joined the lineup of Cypress Hill’s fall festival “Smoke Out” with the Deftones, Method Man, and others. After this, Universal Records signed Afroman to a six-album deal, and Universal released The Good Times in 2001. The Good Times was a compilation of Afroman’s first two albums and some new tracks.

Afroman started releasing his music independently and mostly through the Internet in 2004, and that year, he recorded Jobe Bells, which satirized traditional Christmas songs.

Afroman was part of the 2010 Gathering of the Juggalos lineup.

In October 2014, Afroman released a remix of his song “Because I Got High,” to highlight the usefulness of marijuana as part of the fight to legalize its sale across the United States.

HI-LIGHT FRIDAYS

Come get your dance on with DJ Neekz and Crew Spinning Dance Music to keep you on the floor all night!!! The most chill and fun party on Friday Nights!

Del the Funky Homosapien Live at Nextdoor

Nextdoor is proud to present the hip-hop legend Del the Funky Homosapien live in concert! Performing one night only, do not miss one of the founding fathers of 90’s hip-hop. Truly this is a man who needs no introduction. Early bird tickets and bottle/VIP specials are available now but going fast!

Born in Oakland, California, he is the cousin of seminal west coast rapper Ice Cube, and began his career writing lyrics for Ice Cube’s group, Da Lench Mob. In 1991, with the help of Ice Cube, Del released his first solo album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, at the age of 18. The album was a commercial success largely due to the popularity of the hit single, “Mistadobalina”. Ultimately Del, who was not pleased with the limited musical range of the album, severed his production-artist relationship with Ice Cube for his next album, No Need for Alarm. No Need for Alarm saw the introduction of the Oakland clique Hieroglyphics, whose original members included Souls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto and Tajai), Casual, Pep Love, Del, and producer Domino. No Need for Alarm helped to expose both the regional Oakland sound of hip hop, as well as the freestyle based, “golden era 90’s” style of hip hop being expanded at the time. Del would not produce another album for five years. About a month before the release of his third album, Future Development, Del received a letter from his label, Elektra, stating that his contract had been terminated. Future Development became available in 1998. The album was only available on the Hieroglyphics website in tape form, but was re-released in 2002 under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label. Del also released another collaborative work with the Hieroglyphics crew in 1998, which was also the Hieroglyphics crew’s first album:3rd Eye Vision. Two years later, Del released his fourth solo album, Both Sides of the Brain, as well as Deltron 3030 which was a collaborative work with artists Dan the Automator and Kid Koala. With Nakamura and Koala, Del was also a guest performer for Gorillaz’ 2001 eponymous album Gorillaz. He appeared on the singles “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House” (see Collaborations). 2003 saw the release of Full Circle, the second full-length album from the Hieroglyphics crew.  In 2004 Elektra released The Best of Del tha Funkee Homosapien: The Elektra Years without the approval of Del. The CD only includes songs from his first two albums, along with a handful of b-sides from that era. Del was not pleased and advised people to not buy the CD, saying it was just Elektra trying to make money off him due to his newfound fame. Together with his crew, Del established his own independent record label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings, which primarily consists of an expanded Hieroglyphics roster and a few other artists with whom the group collaborates regularly. On March 11, 2008 Del released Eleventh Hour through Definitive Jux. On March 31, 2009 Del’s next album Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) was made available for free download on the internet. The album is available at his page on Bandcamp, though he gave away some hard copies on his supporting Funk Man tour. A new video for the first single, “Get It Right Now”, is on YouTube. In September of the same year, he released a new album, Automatik Statik, for an unfixed rate with a minimum of $3. Del released his next album It Ain’t Illegal Yet on August 6, 2010. There is no fixed price for the album, allowing listeners to pay whatever they wish for the album. Paying certain prices for the album will give certain incentives, including opportunities for personal collaborations with Del. Del released the album Golden Era on April 19, 2011 in a three-disc set including Funk Man (The Stimulus Package)andAutomatik Statik. Del teamed back up with super producer Dan the Automator and World renowned DJ Kid Koala for a second Deltron 3030 record entitled “Event 2” which debuted in September 2013 and featured Damon Albarn, Black Rob, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zach Dela Rocha Jamie Cullum, Casual, Lonely Island, and more. Del shared a free LP entitled Iller Than Most on January 2, 2014. He uploaded the record to SoundCloud under the username Zartan Drednaught COBRA. He described the project as “lyrically ill but fun to listen to, nothing super heavy.” Del handled the production on the project as well.
